Be very careful where you buy a web site

Be very careful whom you choose to build and host your web site Last June I bought a web site from a company named BT Customer Street. Since then BT Customer Street has been telling me that the site is getting regular Hits.

However so far my web site has not generated a single job for me. It is proving to be a very expensive mistake and because I have signed up to a 12-month contract with them I am stuck with it. Are there any other DEAs out there who have similar experiences with this company?

BT customer street - don't even bother

I have had very similar results with BT Customer Street too - practically nothing for £30+vat every month. Promises to build you a bespoke site (in about a week) but in reality its just a template easily done by yourself. Promises also of 1st page google results and lots of business but in 12 months I only got a handful of calls. Repeated calls from customer services saying your website is ok but we can make you an amazing all-singing all-dancing guaranteed to get you tons of work for about £1000 !!! (no way!)

Amazing in the 1st 10 months I got stats saying I had 20-30 hits a month (but barely a single call). However as soon as I gave the compulsory 60-day termination notice I was getting hits of 300+ a month (still no calls or emails though). Glad to be out of it now.

Better to try one of the very cheap hosting companies out there (no - I am not advertising here!!) who give a free website template to get you started (very simple with no html knowledge programming required) or buy a ready made full graphics (about £30) and with basic html knowledge put it online for about £10 a year !!

Good luck guys and lets try to keep the prices up by not accepting work from panels offering little over £20 a job with lodgements paid. After tax and petrol its practically a free one !!

Be very careful where you buy a web site

I havent had dealings with these guys but nearly every day we are contacted by companies offering to get us at the top of the search lists, optimise our website, build a new one, yada yada.  When we first started up we looked at the prices of all of these packages and then decided to have a go at building our own website using the templating tool provided by our hosting company - fasthosts.  After all it was included for free in our email / website bundle, so why not give it a try.

I looked up Search Engine Optimisation on the Internet and it didnt look so hard so we tried to build the site with some of that knowledge as well.  The site has been up and running for over a year and the whole thing, including development, search engine optimisation and hosting has cost less than £100.  We do get enquiries from it but not as many as you may think.  The majority of our business comes from networking, advertising with the local landlords association, and business development with solicitors, estate agents and letting agents.

My advice would be to ignore all of these snake-oil salesmen and have a go yourself.
