The cowboys may have met their match

Reading all the post about DEAs charging just £30 for an Energy Performance Certificate, (and in some cases even less) the situation is becoming rather depressing for a group of professionals who are trying to do a thorough job and producing meaningful EPC’s.

For those of us who have committed to starting a proper business and pride ourselves on our professionalism and approach to work , find it difficult to compete with the individuals who have other full time jobs and produce Energy Performance Certificates  on the side, either during days off or at week ends.

The same things happen in the building trade with property maintenance where the cowboys turn up and do a sub standard job and leave the property owners with a mess on their hands, The only difference being that individuals have no ideal what the DEA is doing or how accurate the Certificate is, and in most cases, do not care either.

I think that the crunch comes when the ‘TAXMAN’, yes that dreaded Taxman comes to town. I for one will be happy when the sheriff hits town to sort out who the cowboys are and whether these part time DEA’s are declaring their earnings.

With every Energy Assessment carrying the DEA’s identification there is little research required by these law enforcers in finding the cowboys. When Tax is deducted from these poultry earnings, they may reconsider their approach to work, or even if they still wish to continue with the job.

I am not saying that every low charging Domestic Energy Assessor avoids paying their dues but it seems to me that many of them do the job for pocket money and are unlikely to keep proper books like the rest of us.

We may have our day yet!

We may even try and shout these thoughts a bit louder and try and make the appropriate people hear us!
